How do I tip people?

How do I get to my hotel from the airport?

You should almost never have to use the taxi when you arrive at the airport. You will 100% of the time be overcharged compared to booking your private transfer service prior to your arrival. With one-way trips to your hotel starting at $39, private transfer services could not be more worth!

What is the best time to visit Cancun?

The best time to visit Cancun is from December to April, during the peak tourist season. This is when the weather is warm and sunny, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Other times of the year are perfectly fine too, but note that summer tends to be more humid and tropical! Rain is common during the summertime.

Will it rain?

Please keep in mind that Cancun is considered tropical, with a muggy, rainy season from May to October and a cooler, relatively dry season from November to April. Even though you might see rain on the weather forecast, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be raining 24/7 nonstop. Rain in Cancun can literally last only for only 5 minutes with the rest of the day being dry and cloudy, or it can rain nonstop. The weather will be hot and the party will be plenty for you to enjoy!

The forecast says that it's raining throughout my vacation. Should I cancel?

Cancun being the tropical destination described in the FAQ above, you should expect it to rain a few times per day. Unless there's a named hurricane with an assigned category/level, you generally have absolutely nothing to worry about. Rain is frequent during rainy season, but they last for minutes before it stops. You should have absolutely nothing to worry about, but the choice to reconsider your trip is yours.

Is Cancun safe for tourists?

Yes! Cancun is generally safe for tourists, but as with any tourist destination, it is always wise to take precautions and stay aware of your surroundings. You don't want to be out on the streets being belligerent drunk, starting fights, public urination, and public disturbance. The police in Cancun can and will extort or arrest tourists.

Is there seaweed?

There will likely be seaweed year-round unfortunately. What I like to do is look at live cams to see what the beaches look like. A good live cam is Live Aqua's as it's centered in the middle of all eastern hotels on the hotel zone. Find it on YouTube!

How early should we leave our hotel to make our international flight?

4 hours is my recommendation from Hotel Zone. More from farther locations. There's a lot of ongoing road construction around the Cancun Airport so you will experience a lot of delays.

What is the average cost of a vacation in Cancun?

The average cost of a vacation in Cancun varies greatly depending on the time of year, your travel style, and the type of activities you want to do. You can expect to spend anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 per person for a 7-day trip. Most hotels in the Hotel Zone and surrounding area are All-Inclusive, so food and drinks are included in the price of your hotel. However, if you splurge and visit the Fine Dining restaurants in the area, expect to go over your budget fairly easily. Cancun is also a hot destination for Duty-Free luxury shopping. You should take that into account as well if you're interested in tax-free shopping.

Is smoking allowed in Cancun?

It's still legal to smoke in public spaces that have not been designated as smoke-free. Like the street or sidewalk or outside of any private place.

Places you can't smoke include patios, terraces, balconies, amusement parks, playgrounds, sports areas, hotels, beaches, entertainment centers, courts, stadiums, arenas, shopping malls, markets, hospitals, clinics, churches or places of religious worship, restaurants and bars, as well as transport stops.

Most resorts have a smoking section or designated smoking area which will allow you to smoke.

Aside from the beach, and the cigarette purchasing process, not much has changed for your average tourist.

There is a tax of over $500 pesos (MXN)(533 as of this year) per person to access the Chichen Itza archeological site.
